TWO WEDGWOOD BLACK BASALT FIGURES, â VOLTAIREâ AND â ROUSSEAUâ circa 1820, impressed uppercase marks and titles, both 18th Century French â philosophesâ modeled standing, on grassy mound bases, Voltaire after the sculpture by Jean-Claude Francois Rosset (1703-1786), wearing a hat, long overcoat, embroidered waistcoat and breeches, his finger marking a page in a book held in his right hand; Rousseau, modeled from a print of 1778, depicted holding a posy in his right hand, a tricorn hat tucked under his left arm, wearing a coat, vest and breeches, h: 8 5/8 in. and 10 3/4 in. (2)
