Signed "William H. Rehnquist" in black ink. This is a signed and dated typed letter on letterhead of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.The letter is dated May 24, 1999 and is addressed to Mrs. John Wisdom. John Wisdom had been a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Letter states, "Dear Mrs. Wisdom, You know far better than I do what a rich and full life your late husband led. His contributions to the law as a jurist were important to his court and to his country. His reputation as a staunch champion of the need for implementing the Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education is well known. He and his colleagues on the Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit were instrumental in seeing that the Court's mandate was carried out during a very difficult time. By his work, Judge Wisdom exemplified the best traditions of an independent judiciary. Sincerely, William H, Rehnquist". Normal mailing folds, otherwise in fine condition. Born in Wisconsin in 1924, William Rehnquist became chief justice of the Supreme Court in 1986. After 1989, when a "new right" majority had been established by President Reagan, Rehnquist framed a series of conservative rulings on abortion, affirmative action and capital punishment. During his tenure as chief justice, Rehnquist also presided over the impeachment trial of Bill Clinton and the Bush v. Gore election decision. He died in 2005 in Virginia.
