TYPED LETTER personally signed "Jim Irwin" in black ink. This letter in on HIGH FLIGHT FOUNDATION letterhead, measures 8.5" X 11" and is dated March 6, 1979. Letter has normal mailing folds otherwise in fine condition. Letter states, "Dear Bernice: Enclose is the item which you requested me to sign. Our expenses in sending a photo are $1.50. Now I would like to take a few moments of your time. The Apollo 15 lunar mission in which I participated was a challenge for which I spent many years in preparation. I am grateful for that opportunityto serve my country and my fellow men. But now I am involved in an even greater mission, reaching out to God and man through High Flight Foundation. Enclosed is our newsletter which describes many of our projects. One which is especially dear to my heart is "Project Uplift," a program which permits me and other former astronauts to speak in school assemblies with the youth of America. Today, more than ever, our young people need positive input, and Project Uplift gives us an opportunity each year to share with thousands of young people as they prepare and develop body, mind and spirit. If you would like to assist in this endeavor, I have enclosed a self-addressed return envelope. Cordially yours, (signed) James B. Irwin President". James B. Irwin, in full James Benson Irwin (born March 17, 1930, Pittsburgh, Pa., U.S.?died Aug. 8, 1991, Glenwood Springs, Colo.), American astronaut, pilot of the Lunar Module on the Apollo 15 mission (July 26?Aug. 7, 1971), in which he and the mission commander, David R. Scott, spent almost three days on the Moon?s surface investigating the Hadley-Apennine site, 462 miles (744 km) north of the lunar equator. The two spent 18 hours outside the Lunar Module, traveled on the Moon?s surface in a specially designed vehicle, and collected many rocks and core samples. Alfred M. Worden piloted the Command Module, orbiting the Moon while the others worked below. Irwin graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., in 1951 and transferred to the Air Force. He earned a master?s degree in aeronautical engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1957. At the time he was selected for the manned space program (1966), he was assigned to the Air Defense Command, Colorado Springs, Colo. The Apollo 15 flight was his only space mission. Irwin resigned from the Air Force and the space program in 1972 to form and become president of High Flight Foundation, a Christian evangelical organization.
