Table "Violon" (Louis – Philippe Style) This attractive centre or occasional table, known as the "Violon" (Violin) model (Images 650 – 1 and 650 – 4), is characteristic of the Louis – Philippe style (c. 1830 – 1848), which favoured solid construction, comfortable lines, and a blend of simplified historical motifs. The piece is influenced by designs of Georges Jacob and the subsequent Empire and Restauration styles carried on by his sons, embodying the Period Style 's preference for robust classical turning and stability. Period Style Style: The piece embodies the Louis – Philippe aesthetic – a sturdy, unpretentious style popular with the bourgeoisie, emphasizing function and solidity over excessive ornamentation. It is crafted from solid cherry wood (Merisier massif), which provides a rich, warm finish and the robust durability valued in this era. Shape ("Violon"): The tabletop is the defining feature, having a distinctive "Violon" or violin/kidney shape. This shape is curvilinear and asymmetrical, demonstrating a subtle, lasting influence of the earlier Rococo (Louis XV) taste for serpentine lines, but executed with a simplified, thicker edge profile. Drawers and Apron: The apron (or belt) follows the curved contour of the top and contains either a central drawer or small drawers on the sides. The drawer front is simple, typically featuring a single, undecorated knob. Pedestal and Base: The table is supported by a robust central pedestal base. Pedestal: The central column is boldly turned, featuring a prominent bulbous or spool shape. This heavy turning is typical of Louis – Philippe furniture, providing a strong sense of stability. Feet: The table stands on a tripartite or quadruped scalloped base that features pronounced, outward – sweeping cabriole feet which terminate in scrolls. These scrolling feet, while curved like the cabriole legs of Louis XV, are much heavier and more solid, perfectly illustrating the Louis – Philippe preference for robust, anchored forms. This "Violon" table is a fine reproduction example of 19th – century domestic furniture, successfully combining a graceful, curved top with a strong, solid pedestal base. H67 L130 P80. This Hand Crafted piece orignates from the Paris Design House Ateliers Allot [ Ref: 650]
