An equally extensive carpet production can be found in one of the largest cities in the country, with qualities ranging from simple to luxurious. Carpets from Tabriz are easily distinguished by an additional name. The categorization refers to the knot density per square meter, which gives an indication of the quality

While the finest carpets have well over a million knots called 80Raj, simple carpets still have a density of 300,000-500,000 knots (40Raj) . A density that far exceeds that of most other carpet provenances. Tabriz 70Raj with approx. 1,000,000 knots per m2 are already rare. Some world-famous master weavers make Tabriz carpets with 80 Raj.

Raj is often used as a unit of quality in Iran. The number of knots is counted every 7 cm in the direction of the warp yarn on the back of the carpet. This number also gives the Raj value. Quality carpets from Tabriz usually have a short pile of good wool. Its pattern is dominated by a central medallion, the surroundings of which are decorated with floral garden motifs.
