Tabriz Silk
Northwest Persia (Iran), c. 313 x 246 cm, last quarter of the 19th century, in unusual large format, with c. 1 mill. kts/sqm, the present piece is heavily damaged with low and bare pile areas, numerous repairs and repiled sections entirely mounted on linen, field or garden design with many inscription cartouches for the most part with Persian pious verses. Translation of the blue cartouches along the main border: “the date: the first day of Rabi al-Thani; the year: 1315 [=30 August 1897]” as well as “this is the work of al-Sabbagh (the dyer)”.
