Taikan Monju (1771 - 1842)
A Japanese Zen calligraphy, ink on paper, mounted as hanging scroll, transliteration reads Mokuin nawa betsu ni ari, signed by the artist with a seals, 101 x 28cm.
cf. Taikan Monju was the former superintendent priest of the Rinzai sect Nanzen temple, born in Gifu prefecture in 1771. He studied Zen Buddhism under master Tourei Enji.
Condition Report:
Fraying, creasing, and minor foxing to the mount and painting. A few holes to the top of the mount, probably worm holes, commensurate with age. One scroll end has fallen off.
