Tairona Jade & Shell Bead Necklace w/ Stone Pendants

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A beautiful necklace constructed from dozens of petite disc and barrel shaped Spondylus shell beads and 13 large pendant stones of omphacite jade, jadeite, and greenstone. The strand is arranged with the sizable beads at the center. The elongated tear-drop shaped greenstones are not only highly polished, but exhibit string cut linear designs across the surface. These 8 beads are symmetrically arranged just before the 2 tubular barrels. The pale green barrel bead is jadeite and the mottled barrel is an omphacite jade, which flank the 2 large stone spools and a thin disc. All are hand drilled with suspension holes and carved from mottled forest-green stone with beige, white, and darker green inclusions. Strung in modern times and capped with a lobster clasp, this is a bold and wearable example of ancient artistry! Size (necklace): 17" L (43.2 cm); (largest bead): 1.75" L x 0.75" W (4.4 cm x 1.9 cm)

Provenance: private Andrade collection, New York, New York, USA, acquired 1960s; ex-Knoedler & Company

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
