Rare islamic ottoman HANDMADE Talismanic shirt (jama) covered with handwritten text both sides ( front and back) in Naskh and Thuluth scripts, in assorted colors, arranged in numerous panels, roundels, cartouches. The inscriptions include quotations from the Quran, invocations to God, attributes of God , amulets , prayers and amulets . They are written in Naskh and Thuluth of different sizes in different shapes, patterns, mirrored form and reserved against text and in colors of black, red, blue and gold. This type of Garment was believed to offer luck and protection and was another way of wearing a talisman on ones body, providing guidance and protection to the wearer against the evil eye and providing protection in battle. 'Jama' Shirts like this were worn by soldiers underneath battle attire providing a spiritual shield when engaging the enemy. Size : 92cm x 76cm Estimated late 19th C
