Tall 19th C. Indonesian Wood Torso - Male Ancestor
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Flores Island, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden torso of a male ancestor figure. The columnar body features incised arms that stretch to the bottom of the integral plinth, and the tapered neck lends to the size of the head above. Incised eyes, a broad nose, parted lips, and pinned-back ears comprise the minimalist countenance. The surfaces have developed smooth layers of brown patina that are indicative of the figure's age. A lower tenon is inserted into the display stand. Size: 5.5" L x 5" W x 18" H (14 cm x 12.7 cm x 45.7 cm); 20" H (50.8 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010
