Tall Chancay Cuchimilco Guardian Figure, Peru
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000–1470 CE. A hollow ceramic guardian figure, or cuchimilco, standing on columnar legs, with arms outstretched from the shoulders in the orant gesture characteristic of this figure type. The face is painted in red and cream with a diagonal bipartite division, beneath a tall biconical cap. Fine linework traces the anatomy, including delineated nipples, a triangular abdominal design, and modeled genitalia identifying the figure as male, while banded pigment on the legs suggests body paint or tattoo. The figure is slip-painted in the maroon and buff palette characteristic of Chancay ceramics and is associated with burial contexts as a tomb offering placed among textiles and grave goods. Size: 9.8" W x 19.2" H x 5.5" D (24.9 cm W x 48.8 cm H x 14.0 cm D).
Provenance: private Saint Louis, Missouri, USA collection, acquired between 1970 and 1995
