Tall Greek Apulian Xenon Pottery Olpe

Magna Graecia, South Italy, Apulian, ca. 340 to 300 BCE. A beautiful, handled pottery vessel known as an olpe decorated in added red pigment on a lustrous black glaze. The ancient olpe displays a reverse pear-shaped body, a tapered neck, and a wide, flared rim, all sitting upon a narrow, planar base with a bifurcated handle connecting shoulder to rim. A series of 3 lovely registers adorns the body and shoulder, consisting of vertical striated lines, 2 bands of petaloid designs, and a maze motif. Size: 4.875" in diameter x 6" H (12.4 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: private Corpus Christi, Texas, USA estate collection, acquired 1960s to 1970s
