Tall Greek Attic Blackware Oinochoe, TL Tested

Ancient Greece, Athens, Attic, ca. 5th century BCE. A fabulous wheel-thrown pottery pouring vessel known as an oinochoe with a discoid foot, an inverted piriform body, a rounded shoulder that tapers inward to form the corseted neck, and a trefoil style pouring spout with a spade-shaped lip and a pair of curled volutes. The bifurcated strap handle is adorned with a petite actor maskette near the top terminal as well as another face - perhaps that of a maenad - near the flared bottom terminal. The exterior surfaces of the oinochoe are adorned with lustrous slip of a jet-black hue. Size: 5.5" W x 10.625" H (14 cm x 27 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

Condition Report: Minor nicks and abrasions to handle, spout, body, and foot, with light fading to areas of glaze pigment, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and excellent. Nice traces of original glaze throughout. Two TL drill holes: one beneath base, and one beneath top rim.
