Tall Greek Attic White Ground Lekythos

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $2000**

Ancient Greece, Athens (Attic), Classical Period, ca. late 6th to early 5th century BCE. A very large white ground lekythos with a classic form and liberal mineral deposits across the surface. The body most likely once presented a figural scene and/or fine-line decorative motifs. The term white ground relates to the light colored slip coating on the body and shoulder of the vase. Upon this background, motifs were drawn in outline and then hand painted in rich colors. The vast majority of these vessels were created to pay tribute to the deceased in Athens - either for burial with the deceased or as grave offerings. Lekythoi traditionally held aromatic oils and were decorated in the white ground technique from the middle until the end of the fifth century BCE. An exceptionally large example. Size: 13.75" H (34.9 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Dr. Sid Port collection, California, USA, acquired in the 1980s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#143847
Condition Report: Decoration on white ground body has faded/worn away over time, but the vessel is intact, covered with scattered mineral deposits, and impressively large.
