[ translate ]

\Artist: Taller del Vigatà (Francesc Pla i Durán)
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Not signed\Dimensions: 114_91_4_cm
Important work, Catalan baroque period. It is an oil on canvas, very close to the magnificent Catalan painter Francesc Pla i Durán (Vic, 1743 - Barcelona, 1805) nicknamed “El Vigatà”, as Vic was his hometown and he was a well renowned artist at the time. The painting is apparently not signed. Currently it is in good condition since 4 years ago it was properly refurbished by a highly qualified restorer. I would like to point out that the canvas is his, only the stretcher is from a subsequent period, in fact it is a 20th century stretcher. It is exhibited in a golden, wooden frame from the late 19th century. Dimensions of the work: 88 cm height x 65 cm width Dimensions of the frame: 114 cm height x 91 cm width Francesc Pla i Duran - known as El Vigatà (Vic, Barcelona; 1743 - Barcelona, 1805) was a Spanish painter. In 1756 he settled in Barcelona, where he was Francesc and Manuel Tramulles’ disciple. He was registered at the school of painters in 1771, he was a ‘clavario’ (1776) and first consul (1782) of this institution. He devoted himself mainly to mural decoration with biblical or mythological themes, sometimes helped by the painter Llucio Romeu, also from Vic. In 1784 he carried out the decoration of the bishop of Barcelona’s palace, in 1791 the Palacio Moja, considered one of his best works – in 1793 the house of the merchant Joan Ribera, in Nou de Sant Francesc street (currently in Pau Casals’ house in Vendrell) and in 1796 he decorated the Savassona Palace (currently the Ateneo Barcelonés) . 1 The decorations of the Clarós house and the Marquis of Monistrol house - currently disappeared, are at the Palacio Real de Pedralbes. Stylistically, “El Vigatà” can be situated in a personal style that, emanating from the rococo style, reaches a certain pre-romanticism. He is sometimes compared to the French painter Eugenie Delacroix.
