Tanged Dagger Blade
17th-14th century BC. A bronze dagger with flat and blunt blade, well-marked shoulders and short medium sized tang. See for the type Maxwell-Hyslop, R., 'Daggers and swords in Western Asia: a Study from Prehistoric Times to 600BC,' in Iraq, Volume 8, 1946, pp.1-65, pl.III, fig.27. 89 grams, 19.5cm (7 3/4"). Property of an Essex gentleman; acquired on the UK art market; previously from an old English collection formed in the 1980s. Small tanged blades without a rivet, which sometimes are identified as spear-heads, are most likely daggers or long knives, possibly also used for domestic purposes. Both forms are characteristic of the Hyksos culture in the Levant. [No Reserve]
