Satsuma ceramics represent one of Japan's most precious artistic treasures.
Originally produced in the province of Satsuma, now Kagoshima, on the island of Kyushu during the Edo period (1603-1868) , Satsuma ceramics are works of art of a unique artisan quality, which are the result of the incredible skill of the artists Japanese and the low temperature cooking technique. This technique allows you to create delicate shapes and bright colors and its very fine cràclure, visible to the naked eye, is noticeable in every work.
The subjects depicted often present human or animal figures, landscapes, flowers and plants with the choice of colors and shades being very important.
In the 19th century, great master decorators and modelers opened new kilns in the provinces of Kyoto, Awata and Osaka, breathing new life into Satsuma pottery with new techniques, decorations and colours.
Today, Satsuma ceramics are still highly prized by collectors around the world and are considered true treasures of Japanese art.
