Teapot by Yamada Hosei, with Box
Finely formed with a rounded body, an elongated side handle and a short upright spout, the teapot is made of smoothly finished red Tokoname stoneware. The surface is delicately engraved by Kodo with a landscape inspired by the Tokaido Fifty Three Stations, depicting Mount Fuji, pine trees, waterways and distant dwellings. The composition is rendered with controlled and varied incision, creating a convincing sense of depth across the curved surface. Fine lines define the pine needles, mountain slopes and rippling water, while the restrained use of open space allows the warm red clay to remain an integral part of the design. The inscription on the lid and the carefully balanced proportions of the handle, spout and body further demonstrate the refinement of the workmanship.Yamada Hosho [1950-2016]was a Tokoname ceramic artist born in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture. After graduating from the ceramics department of Aichi Prefectural Tokoname High School, he established Hosho Pottery Studio in 1971. He was particularly known for finely formed teapots decorated with precise engraved designs, and received the Minister of Education Encouragement Award at the Japan Sencha Craft Exhibition in 1987.Combining Yamada Hosho's disciplined potting with Kodo's detailed landscape engraving, this teapot is both a functional sencha utensil and a refined work of Tokoname ceramic art. Accompanied by its original fitted wooden box. Height: 8.3cm Length: 14.5cm Wide: 11.3cm
