"Utrillo was a true 'renaissance man.' In addition to being a painter, he was also an archeologist, engineer, and historian and traveled all over the world. While in Paris in 1891, he adopted the son of Suzanne Valodon, who thereafter became known as Maurice Utrillo and eventually earned an even greater measure of fame in his own right. Don Miguel founded several art magazines in Spain and championed the work of Zuloaga. He was influenced by the symbolists and by Alphonse Mucha and Art Nouveau, as can be seen in this poster for the Lyric Theatre" (Timeless Images, p. 177).
