Teddy Roosevelt TLS as Editor of Metropolitan to Former Secretary
Theodore Roosevelt
New York, NY, November 1, 1917
Teddy Roosevelt TLS as Editor of Metropolitan to Former Secretary
TLS
Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919). A 1p watermarked TLS, measuring 8.5" x 7.5", dated November 1, 1917, New York, NY. A letter from former 26th President Theodore Roosevelt as editor of Metropolitan Magazine to a John. J. Kehoe. Notations from previous collector indicate this could be an intimate letter as it was written to Roosevelt's former secretary from his time as Colonel and signed as "T" rather than "Theodore". The notation affixed at bottom margin reads in part, "when he signed 'T', he thought of himself as 'Teddy', and not as 'Theodore'". Wear includes edge toning, with darkened handling marks, moderate creasing throughout. Additional areas of isolated tearing alongside right upper edge, fading of ink in signature, and ink bleeding in upper right of verso. Overall, good condition.
In 1914, former president Roosevelt became an editor of Metropolitan, with all intention of signing a three-year contract. However, he would instead work on editorials for the magazine up until his death in 1919. He wrote many critical essays of President Woodrow Wilson's handling of World War I.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
