Terracotta bowl (1) - Crooked terracotta - Ciotola Samanide dipinta con volatile - Persia - 11th century

[ translate ]

Samanide bowl in terracotta painted with a bird. East Persia, 11th century (or later) This bowl is classified with the term "Sari", which refers to the city in northern Iran from which it takes its name, where previously it was assumed that ceramics of this type had been made: animals and mainly birds. The 'Sari' artefacts, however, do not have the same high quality as other Samanidi ceramics and it is assumed that they were considered a provincial product of wider consumption. Traces of restoration. Provenance: former J. B. private collection, acquired before 1970, Italy
