Thai Sukhothai Glazed Pottery Lidded Jar, ex-Museum

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Sukhothai Kingdom, ca. 1238 to 1438 CE. An attractive pottery vessel presenting a circular foot and impressively thin walls that spread outwards to an annular rim, fit snugly with a hemispherical lid. Coated in lustrous, beige glaze, the ancient vessel is adorned with a series of incised bands near its foot. A pointed and tiered handle, reminiscent of a Thai pagoda, caps the lid and is surrounded by 2 additional tiers and a starburst motif. The vessel delightfully slopes to one side, adding unique charm to this elegant example! Size: 5.125" in diameter x 7.5" H (13 cm x 19 cm)

Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998

Condition Report: Chip to handle, as well as nicks, chips, and abrasions throughout, commensurate with age. Chipping and losses to glaze. Otherwise, excellent with rich earthen deposits on interior and lovely craquelure to glaze.
