Thangka - Canvas - Shakyamuni Buddha holding the offerings bowl - Tibet - 19th century

Description The Buddha is seated in the lotus position, legs crossed,his right hand in bhumisparsa- mudra (gesture of calling the earth as witness) , his left hand holding the offerings bowl. His mandorla is surrounded by lotus leaves, and depicted in front of him three precious objects can be seen. They are probably three of the auspicious signs (Astamangala) : on his right the conch, vouching for the absence of evil, glory of all saints, symbolizing the sound of the profound dharma which awakens living beings from the slumber of ignorance and urge them to accomplish their own and others' good in the middle, the abundance vessel, receptacle for the nectar of immortality, symbolizing intellectual richness, representing an endless shower of wealth, prosperity, and all that is good for men materailly and spiritually, topped by a blazing jewel on his left, the lotus, perfection and purity, symbolizing the purification of body, speech and spirit, hallmark of spiritual elevation. On the back three script characters, most probably dedication markings, can be seen ( please check picture) ! ! ! IMPORTANT ! ! ! SIZE OF THANGKA WITHOUT FRAME : 55 cm X 35 cm HIGH QUALITY FRAME WITH CLARITY GLASS TO PROTECT THANGKA Datation Early 19th century - C. 1825 Condition Good general condition, normal signs of age wear Please check pictures for global condition Provenance Collection constituted by Mrs. L. and Mr. B. former ambassador of Unesco in India in office in the years 1960 to 1970.
