Thangka - polychromy on canvas - Thangka on polychrome canvas depicting a mandala - Tibet - Late 17th - early 18th

Description According to the Brahmanic tradition, taken over by tantrism, the making of a mandala depicting the Deity and its powers, or a groups of deties, remains the best way to represent the invisible universe of the forces ruling the cosmos. Mandalas are renowned to bear a great magical force. They are always organized around a deity, a spot (bindu) or a prominent symbol, sometimes, in Tibet, around an historical character (Padmasambhava . . .) A mandala is structured with three concentric enclosures, circles or squares, equiped with four "doors" positioned according to the compass points (in Tibet, south on the left, north on the right, east and zénith downwards, west and Nadir upwards) . Each enclosure is inhabited by deities and symbols. As dififcult as it is to identify the different characters in the center of the mandala, it could be a Kapaladhara Mandala of Hevajra. Above the mandala, five characters representing the Panchen Lama on the left, most probably the Dalï-Lama in the middle and two mahasiddhas and one monk. Under the mandala, from left to right : the white Mahakala, Mahakala Panjarnata (protector of the temple) , and on the right possibly Raktayamari,( red and wrathful representation of Manjushri, similar to Yamatanka) Datation Late 17th - early 18th / C. 1700 Weigth - Bibliography - Art market - Condition Good condition for a tangka over 300 years, accidents, wear.
