An important collection of approximately 1,700 Anglo-Saxon artefacts

Circa 6th-7th Century A.D.

Including: a gilt-silver disc brooch, the centre set with a white stone or paste disc, surrounded by three wedge-shaped garnets and chip-carved angular motifs, within a raised border with a double row of wedge-shaped stamps, corroded iron pin, 36mm diam, 17g; a gilt-bronze disc brooch with central cabochon glass, surrounded by chip-carved zoomorphic interlace decoration, pin missing, 4.3cm diam, 25g; a gilt-bronze oval brooch, set with a millefiori Roman glass inlay, pin missing, 26mm, 8g; a bronze bird brooch with concentric circle stamped decoration, 29mm; several bronze bow brooches with triangular foot-plate, some with incised or punched 5.1cm – 5.6cm, some with iron pins remaining; a copper-alloy bow brooch with circular openwork plate, 7.3cm long, pin missing; a black glass domed spindle-whorl with incised feathered decoration, 41mm diam, 44g; a spherical mosaic glass bead with blue and amber set into a dark brown glass matrix, with bronze wire remaining, 18mm diam; a bronze pendant with beaded edges, set with a tear-shaped cabochon amber glass, 27mm, 3g; a small circular gold pendant with beaded edges and loop for suspension, set with a cabochon garnet, 11mm; various beads, including a re-strung necklace composed of 28 beads, including three amethyst beads and other coloured glass and paste beads; a large number of loose amber and glass beads; a hemispherical glass bowl, 14cm diam, 5.6cm high and two glass globular bottles with narrow neck and out-turned rim, 6.9cm high and 7.1cm high; a copper-alloy oval armband, 10cm diam; silver rings with loop twisted terminals, 2.5cm max diam;

Pottery:

Including: a pottery urn with rounded body, the shoulder sloping towards the rim, the lower body decorated with a linear pattern, 14cm high; an urn, the shoulder decorated with incised triangles and stippled decoration with pinched-out ribs, 16cm high; a globular vessel with short cylindrical neck, 16.4cm high; an undecorated globular vessel, 15cm high; another a dark grey burnished vessel with squat spherical body, narrow neck and funnel-rim, 10.5cm high; and a small incense vessel of circular form with sloping shoulder and openwork cylindrical walls, 8.5cm diam. 4.2cm high

Buckles and belt-fittings:

Including: two large D-shaped section copper-alloy buckles, one with incised decoration, 4cm x 3cm, 46g and 3.6cm x 2.8cm, 42g; a copper alloy openwork buckle-plate of rectangular form with stamped decoration, the terminals of stylised adorsed bird’s heads, with oval buckle, 5.9cm x 2cm, in two parts; an openwork bronze buckle with rectangular loop and key-shaped box-plate with rounded terminal, 8cm long;a leaf-shaped gilt-silver buckle-plate with oval buckle, the plate decorated with a stylised anthropomorphic design and three domed bosses, the gilt beaded collar remaining on two, 4cm long, 4g; an openwork buckle-plate with stamped decoration and oval buckle, 4.6cm long; a copper alloy buckle with leaf-shaped plate, three domed rivets and an oval buckle, 5.9cm long;

Bronze and iron weaponry and implements:

Including iron shield bosses, some plain and some decorated with copper alloy discs; iron spearheads, 40cm average length; a fragmentary iron pommel with silver inlay, 5.8 cm long, and various buckles; keys, lock-plates, and knives; pins and needles, including two with engraved detail below the eye, 6cm long; fragmentary iron and copper alloy chatelaine; tweezers, including a pair with incised detail and stippled edges, 5.9cm; and other iron, copper-alloy, bone, shell, silver, glass, whetstones, square and shoe-shaped studs, pottery, jet and other artefacts and fragments; and a replica of the Anglo-Saxon disc brooch; site reports, press cuttings (a lot)

Provenance:

Found in the course of excavations of inhumation burials in an Anglo-Saxon cemetery, Ozengell, Kent, between 1977-1981.

On loan to The Powell-Cotton Museum, Quex Park, Birchingham, Kent, 1983-2010, some items displayed.
