The horrors of the Holocaust inspired a number of pre-Code stories, from Bernie Krigstein's "Master Race" (Impact #1, March-April 1955) to this mag's "Candles for the Dead," which most likely sprung from accounts of Nazis making soap from fat rendered from human bodies:

"In the grisly 'Candles for the Dead' a Balkan chandler can't fill his orders because of a cattle plague so he substitutes human corpses in his tallow vats and fashions his candles from the result. Unfortunately, once lit these candles give off a foul odor and emit the spirits of the dead criminals whose bodies were used to make them." — William Schoell, The Horror Comics: Fiends, Freaks and Fantastic Creatures, 1940s-1980s. McFarland & Co.: 2014, p. 98.

A deluxe limited edition of 12 hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a small number of softcovers. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $40, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Eight of the 12 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now.
