The Book of Mormon, third edition.
Joseph Smith, translator.
The Book of Mormon, third edition.
Nauvoo, IL: Ebenezer Robinson and Don Carlos Smith, 1840
[5], 8-571, [2] pages as issued. 12mo, contemporary sheep with 4 double gilt bands on backstrip, lacking spine title, worn, boards detached; intermittent moderate foxing, a few light pencil notes in margins; 1843 inscription on front free endpaper.
Third edition, first state (with unbroken "e" on page 9, and without the index leaves issued in 1841). It was the first stereotyped edition, and the last one which Joseph Smith had the opportunity to personally revise. Only about 4,000 copies were printed, making it a smaller print run than the 1830 first edition, and thus scarcer at auction. The binding on the present example matches the publisher's binding described in Crawley. Crawley 83; Flake 597; Howes S623 ("aa"); Sabin 83040; Streeter sale IV:2263.
Provenance: "J.W. French from Mr. D. King, Wash'n 1843."
