(x) The Borough of Armagh Gold Medal worn by Colonel W. Kelly C.B., member of a prominent Irish family hailing from that County who served with distinction during the Peninsular War and Anglo-Nepalese War in 1816

Borough of Armagh Gold Medal, 36mm, gold, with large loop suspension, obverse with a finely-chased Irish Harp, applied to the centre, the details 'BOROUGH of ARMAGH.' hand-engraved around, reverse with a crown, edge plain, good very fine

Tests as 84% purity. Weight 18.77g.

The Kelly family, of Dawson's Grove, County Armagh, were well-known in this area during the 18th and 19th centuries - indeed, one of Colonel William Kelly's four brothers became 'Sovereign' (Mayor) of the Borough; two brothers joined William in military service, and the remaining sibling entered the church. The Kelly's were therefore undoubtedly prominent in the local community and this medal may have been awarded to Colonel William as a token of approbation and esteem.
