June 12, 1847 issue of The Californian, the first California newspaper, first published in Monterey, CA on August 15, 1846. Originally published by Walter Colton and Robert Semple on the Ramage screw-type press used by Agustin V. Zamorano, the first printing press in California. The type used for the newspaper was Zamorano's own, a small pica No. 1. The paper came from a cache aboard the ship Congress, on which Colton served as Chaplain.

The first page features "A Legend of the Civil War" by Emma Poulton. On the second page is a lengthy piece on a financial dispute involving Robert F. Stockton. The rest of the paper consists of misellaneous local news
Condition Report: Torn neatly in two on original folds (the paper is folded into fourths), toning and some foxing, chipping and closed tears to edges, some closed tears at folds; good.
