The Chara of Pechersky Abbey

A round shallow dish with a slightly raised centre. Engraved to the body in cyrillic, translated roughly so: "Chara of Pechersky Abbey, made during the office of Archimandrite Paisius" Engraved weight in cyrillic to the underside "32 1/2 zolotnik". The openwork handle decorated with vines and grapes surrounding a relief mascaron. Diameter without handle 12 cm, weight 111 g.
Russia, unmarked, 1669 - 99.

Pechersky Abbey near Pskow had two Archimandrites named Paisius, one from 1669 - 1682, and one from 1686 - 1699. The abbey was well-known for its treasury, whose inventory was published in 1893 and included various charas.
