Size of the binding: 8 ¼ inches x 10 ¾ in., printed title-page (with the reverse blank); introduction (pp. [iii]-v). [6] pp., pp. [1]-41. No printer's imprint on the reverse of the title-page: first edition, first issue: Todd & Bowden (1998), 1Aa, pp. 9-10. Bound in full, dark brown morocco leather by Zaehnsdorf, with their gilt stamp on the lower front inner turn-in; five raised bands on the spine, with gilt titling, double-line borders, and richly gilt inner dentelles, brown, watered silk endpapers, top-edge gilt. The fore & lower page edges are untrimmed, keeping the original wide margins. The front outer hinge is slightly tender, and the outer hinges show some wear to the leather surface and some rubbing to cover corners. A few small, scattered brown spots are presen;, light age-related tanning to the title-page, but generally, a clean and very well-preserved copy of Scott's first book. With the bookplate of Cleveland, Ohio based book collector, William G. Mather (1857-1951), on the reverse of the front free endpaper. A rare item.
