The Chazon Ish’s personal Shulchan Aruch

A set of Sefer Shulchan Aruch containing five volumes .
Vilna edition 1871-1874.
This set was used by the Chazon Ish while living in Vilna and includes some handwritten notations.
In 1929 the Chazon Ish settled in Vilna and learned at the home of his brother-in-law, Rabbi Shmuel Greineman, who allocated a room in his house for the Chazon Ish. The sparsely furnished room had only necessities; a desk, chair, bed and a few basic sefarim. During this time, the Chazon Ish closeted himself in his room learning day and night, and this is the very Shulchan Aruch that the Chazon Ish used during that time. It remained in the hands of his brother-in-law, Rabbi Shmuel, who gave it to his son-in-law, Rabbi Beinish Finkel- the Mirer Rosh Yeshivah.

T he Chazon Ish stated that a sefer which has been used for learning has more kedusha than an unused sefer. (Stories of the Chazon Ish vol.3 pg. 94) It is unimaginable the kedusha of this set Shulcha Aruch - used and annotated by the Chazon Ish himself.

The Yoreh De’ah volume contains two glosses on hilchos mikvaos. The Even Ha’ezer volume has five glosses in hilchos kiddushin and kethubos. The Choshen Mishpat volume has one comment in hilchos mikvaos. The other two volumes have no glosses, but extensive usage is evּident.
