The Works of Israel Zangwill, deluxe edition. Copy 549/1000.
Israel Zangwill (1864-1926) was a renowned Jewish-English writer and Zionist activist. He was born in Britain to a family of Russian descent. He served as a teacher in a school for poor Jewish children in East London. He would write his impressions from there, which served him later in his writing. He first made contact with Herzl in 1895; he even visited the Land of Israel in 1897. Zangwill supported a territorial solution for Jews not necessarily based on the Land of Israel, and after the Zionist Congress rejected the Uganda Scheme, he left the Zionist Federation and established the Jewish Territorial Organization, which searched for solutions for the Jewish people around the world. Zangwill's works deal with Jewish life in the London ghetto, and it was beloved to many Zionist activists.
Elegant edition published a year before the author's passing. It was printed in only 1000 copies, of which the one before us is no. 549. The first volume bears Zangwill's signature.
