The very first issue of this class-conscious newspaper opens, “Welcome to Oakland, the all-American city; welcome to Oakland, the 'city of pain.'" The paper focuses on education, housing, ending the war in Vietnam, police brutality, but pays particular attention to the issues facing the poor in Oakland, especially as it applies to race. Articles include “War on the Poor,” “Bulldozing the Poor,” and “Power for the Poor” alongside a regular column titled the “Poor Speak Out.” Uncommon.
