The Great War R.R.C. pair awarded to Mrs E. C. C. Bramwell, British Red Cross who returned to nursing on the outbreak of the Great War to train the Voluntary Aid Detachment later becoming the Matron of The Red House Auxiliary Hospital, Leatherhead

Emily Caroline Clifford Bramwell was born at Islington, Middlesex on 23 February 1855, the daughter of William and Emily Bramwell. Qualifying as a nurse at Matthew Ward, St. Bartholomew's Hospital in 1884. Working here as a Staff Nurse, Night Supervisor and later Sister Bramwell was on the list of Nurses suggested for promotion to the General Council in 1897, she was also an active member of the League of St. Bartholomew's Nurses. Enlisting with the V.A.D. on 4 February 1915 her first role was one of training for those member's of the detachment who were going to see service. However she soon moved to The Red House Auxiliary Hospital, Leatherhead where she was responsible for supervising the nursing and housekeeping of the hospital as well as some administrative secretarial roles. Awarded the Royal Red Cross in January 1918 Bramwell was invested with it by King George V on 6 April 1918 at Buckingham Palace. She remained at The Red House until 1 March 1919 when she was discharged. Bramwell died on 6 May 1930 at St. Bartholomew's Hospital where she was still working as a Sister; sold together with copied research including copied London Gazette entries, V.A.D. cards and biographical information as well as several copied extracts from The British Journal of Nursing.
