The Imperial Mexican Order of the Eagle – a reduced-size collar chain Silver, gilt and enamelled. Composed of 20 alternating chain links with the crowned monogram "M I" of Emperor Maximilian I and the Mexican eagle with the snake on a nopal cactus. Minor chipping in the enamel. No hallmarks. Weight 238 g.The Imperial Order of the Mexican Eagle was instituted by Emperor Maximilian I on 1 January 1865 and only existed until 19 June 1867, the day the Emperor was executed. The Grand Cross with Collar was reserved for heads of state, otherwise there were five classes. An exceptionally beautiful, rare collar of modern production, similar examples were also made by C. F. Rothe in Vienna.Provenance: Spink & Son, auction on 12 April 2017, lot no. 382, which sold for £10,000.Condition: I - II
