Title: Yearbook of the Scientific Society Affiliated with the University of Kraków. Vol. XIV (Year 14).

Author: Krakow Scientific Society (affiliated with Jagiellonian University) [collective publication; a scientific society founded in 1815, predecessor of the Academy of Learning].

Publisher: Kraków, At the Academic Printing House.

Year of publication: 1831.

Format: 18 cm.

Number of pages: 584.

Binding: half-cloth, second-hand.

Volume fourteen of the “Yearbook” of the Kraków Scientific Society from the first series of publications, which spanned fifteen volumes between 1817 and 1833. It featured works by members of the Society and professors of the Kraków University in fields corresponding to the Society’s departments: theology, law, medicine, mathematics, literature, as well as economics, technical knowledge, and the arts. The volume was published in 1831, the year of the November Uprising, in the Free City of Kraków. From 1841 onward, the “Yearbook” appeared in a new series as “Poczet nowy,” and after 1872, the Academy of Arts and Sciences continued the publication.

The Kraków Scientific Society was founded on July 24, 1815, on the initiative of Jerzy Samuel Bandtki, director of the University Library, with the support of Jagiellonian University Rector Walenty Litwiński. The connection with the university was so close that successive rectors of the University served ex officio as presidents of the Society until 1852. Between 1815 and 1840, it comprised six departments: Theology, Law, Medicine, Mathematics, Literature, and Agriculture, Technical Sciences, and the Arts. In 1872, the Society was transformed into the Academy of Arts and Sciences, the predecessor of today’s Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Provenance: on the title page, a seal reading “Musse Historique Polonais a Rapperswyl”; The volume belonged to the Polish National Museum in Rapperswil, founded on October 23, 1870, by Count Władysław Broel-Plater († 1889). In 1927, the museum’s collections were transported back to Poland and transferred to the National Library and the National Museum in Warsaw, hence the second set of stamps. A significant portion of the Rapperswil collection was destroyed by fire in 1944 in the building of the Krasiński Family Library following the fall of the Warsaw Uprising; therefore, pieces with this provenance are rare.

A must-have for historians of science, researchers of the history of the Jagiellonian University and the Free City of Kraków, as well as collectors of Polish studies with documented Rapperswil provenance. A volume with a dual history: a Kraków print and a memento of the Rapperswil Museum.

The block is compact and stable, the binding is strong, with no loose pages; the fold-out plate is complete and preserved within the block. Handmade, stiff paper with scattered foxing, yellowing, and superficial soiling on the margins from past page-turning. All stamps are legible. The secondary half-cloth binding is rigid and clean, with slight dust on the covers and minimal scuffing of the cardboard at the edges.
