'The Manner's Family Jewel', a jewelled gold and enamel brooch,...

of geometrical shape, the openwork formed of seven rose-cut diamond-framed oval cartouches decorated with glazed and hair-backed gold initials, from top to bottom these are: H below a baron's coronet in crimson enamel, R and VR below ducal coronets, VM. MM and DM, centred with a peacock spreading its tail below, flanked by further diamond scrolls, on a small enamel pedestal above the initial G crowned with a marquess' coronet, all ovals connected with split pearls and further collet-set diamonds, the reverses of the coronets also engraved, apparently unmarked,
in a red leather presentation case stamped for: Carrington & Co / by appointment /130 regent Street, W, around a royal warrant,
7.4cm., 2 7/8. in high

a rather grand object in very good condition

The initials and hair relate to the following family members; ‘H’ (Robert Manners, Lord Haddon, 1884-1895), then ‘R’ (Henry, 8th Duke of Rutland 1852-1925), ‘VR’ (Violet, Duchess of Rutland 1856-1937), next row ‘VR’ (Lady Violet Manners, 1888-1971), ‘MM’ (Lady Marjorie Manners 1883-1946), ‘DM’ (Lady Diana Manners 1892-1986) and finally the finial reserve with ‘G’ (Marquess of Granby, later the 9th Duke, 1886-1940).

Provenance:
The gift of Violet, Duchess of Rutland (1856-1937) to her daughter, Lady Marjorie Manners (1883-1946), on the occasion of her marriage in 1912.
