“The Mountain Wanderer”, after Carl Spitzweg, attributed to Willy Moralt (Munich 1884–1947 Lenggries)
Oil on cardboard, framed under glass. Bears a faint inscription lower left, probably “Willy Moralt” and “Spitzweg”; inscribed in pencil on the reverse “Willy Moralt – Copie nach Spitzweg”. Mountain landscape with steep rock faces, a rocky stream and a stone water basin in the lower right; in the middle distance, a hiker with a backpack and walking stick raises his right arm towards a distant figure. Reverse of the cardboard with irregular discolouration, abrasions and small losses to the edges. Paint surface with isolated punctate accretions. Frame with rubbing and losses to the gilded finish and applied ornament. Image dimensions 55.7 × 33.7 cm; frame dimensions 80 × 57.5 cm. Moralt studied under Karl Raupp at the Munich Academy and, from 1914 onwards, increasingly drew on the work of his great-uncle Carl Spitzweg.
