The Ôi River between Suruga and Tôtômi Provinces - uit de serie "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" - Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) - Japan - Meiji period (1868-1912)
Original woodblock print - Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) - The Ôi River between Suruga and Tôtômi Provinces (Sun-En Ôigawa) - from the series "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" - 1891 Memorial Edition
This print was published in 1891 by Kodama Matashichi (active 1881 - 1894) and was printed with the original, partially edited (added the date / inscriptions in the margins) , woodblocks (1859) . The print is part of a memorial edition of the series "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji". Many of the woodcuts from the earlier editions are now extremely rare. This memorial series offers a good opportunity to obtain an original woodcut of these classic Hiroshige designs.
Impression: Soft "bokashi shading". Detailed carving and printing, great attention to detail.
What makes this later "Memorial Edition" edition recognisably different from earlier editions is the presence of the extensive text in both the right and left margins. Also typical is the use of brighter colors, which were popular in the mid-Meiji period
Dimensions (margins not included) : 22 x 34 cm
Total dimensions: 24 x 36 cm
Good condition, partly helped by the fact that the print has been preserved in an album for a long time. Fresh colours. Prent has retained his original album backing. See the photos for details
