The Pensive Christ, Urzędów
clay; 16.5 cm
unsigned
The pottery center in Urzędów is one of the most important and unique historical centers of ceramic craftsmanship in the Lublin region. Its traditions date back several hundred years, combining the mass production of utilitarian vessels with exceptionally original figurative sculpture.
After the war, folk artists such as Jan Gajewski and his son Zygfryd Gajewski from Urzędów gained immense recognition both at home and abroad thanks to their collaboration with Cepelia. It was during this period that unique, green-and-brown-glazed figurines (including the famous figures of the Pensive Christ, musicians, Madonnas, and shrines) were mass-produced and found their way into ethnographic museums and private collections.
