James Russell Lowell (1819-1891) was an American Romantic poet, critic, editor, and diplomat. He is associated with the Fireside Poets, a group of New England writers who were among the first American poets that rivaled the popularity of British poets. These writers usually used conventional forms and meters in their poetry, making them suitable for families entertaining at their fireside.

Ashby Bland Crowder, Richmond, Va. [1941-2019], Professor of English, American Literature, and the Humanities. He was a respected scholar on Victorian literature, published books on Browning, novelist William Humphrey, and poet Seamus Heaney. His edition of the poetry of John Crowe Ransom is scheduled for publication in 2019. He also contributed to many scholarly journals.
