Two travellers in an Italianate landscape; and Three travellers in an Italianate landscape;

the first pencil, pen and black ink and grey wash on paper, the second pencil, black and grey wash on paper, the first bears artist's blindstamp (Lugt 2622a) (lower right), and numbered '6' (lower right), the first 16 x 24.5 cm., the second 25.5 x 35.5 cm., two (2).

Note:
Unlike his brother Sawrey Gilpin (1733-1807), the Reverend William Gilpin did not work as a professional artist. He was a proponent of the 'picturesque' landscape, writing passionately about the principles of landscape painting, and producing travel literature in his attempt to discover the best vistas.
