The Royal Commonwealth Society's wall clock

The Royal Commonwealth Society's wall clock, c1937, was designed by Sir Herbert Baker and made by his son Henry Baker and Robert Stewart. The clock consists of an inner dial which is a twelve hour clock having a stainless steel second hand in addition to a gilt hour and minute hand. Around this a further dial rotates once in 24 hours, carrying symbols of the Commonwealth family countries. As it rotates this outer dial shows the time in all these countries simultaneously against the numbers 1 to 24. Originally these numbers were carved into the stone surround: to reuse the clock they need to be replaced. Sold with framed hand written certificate of explanation and copies of the Horological Journal and correspondence from Herbert Baker, and copies of photographs of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh viewing the clock in its original situ, 104cm diameter. Provenance: The clock is from the RCS and was moved from the hallway to the club room at a later time. The clock was half funded by Edward VIII. MHB March 2024
