The Story of a Puppet, the Adventures of Pinocchio

[ translate ]

By Collodi, C. Translated from the Italian by A. Murray
1st edition. 1st printing. The Children's Library. Very Good condition. All over fine pale blue design to original putty coloured cloth binding, including page edges and matching bright end-papers. Some rubbing wear to corners, and to top and bottom of lightly age-darkened spine. Text block clean, with No Foxing. Still firmly bound. Clean tissue guard to little frontispiece. Charming little set of gift inscriptions to 1st blank page, from a grandmother to grandchild dated 1892, then the now grown-up child's own inscription to her son in 1927, who in turn passed the book on to his own child, the original old lady's great grandchild. Page 145 has little corner crease. The frontispiece has a neat tissue guard. It is interesting to notice the vast difference between this, the original translation, and Walt Disney's saccharine and bowdlerized film of the book. This is the warts and all original, wherein Pinocchio is a rather unpleasant wooden puppet who behaves appallingly throughout, each episode of bad behaviour costing him dear, his wooden feet being burnt off at one stage. It should be remembered that the story is about 19th century Italian Tuscan peasants with very different values and experiences of life to the majority of modern English speaking children! A neat copy of this rare book.
