The Tell-Tale Heart Preliminary Storyboard Sketch (UPA, 1953). "This story is told through the eyes of a madman... Who, like all of us, believed that he was sane." From UPA's 1953 animated adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe's epochal short story, The Tell-Tale Heart, comes this sheet of preliminary storyboard sketches attributed to Paul Julian (1914 – 1995) who served as both designer and color artist for film. This remarkable yet wholly unnerving short so successfully portrayed the psychological horror of its source material that it received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Short Film. Attributed creator Paul Julian, whose name appears in graphite print in the lower right corner of page, was a prolific animator, artist, and voice actor most commonly remembered for provided Warner Brothers' Road Runner's "Beep-Beep!" sound. Legend has it that he initially made the sound to help clear busy hallways at the WB studio when he was in a hurry with a large painting. The Tell-Tale Heart was directed by Ted Parmelee with a highly stylized design as well as fantastic narration by British actor James Mason. This 12 field animation sheet features sketches of several moments in the ominous film, many from when the police arrive at the old man's home. It has been rendered in blue pencil with some additional graphite notes including "Orig Sketches Tale Tail Heart" in the lower right of the reverse side. The sketches range in size from 1" x 0.75" to 3.5" x 1.75", filling the upper half of the sheet. With typical handling and edge wear including age-related toning, minor edge creases/tears, and some pinholes, overall this remarkably rare page of storyboard sketches is in Very Good condition.
