Title: The Training of the Human Plant - 1907 Signed
Author: Luther Burbank
Date/Period: 1907
Publisher: The Century Co. NY
Edition: First edition
Additional Information: Inscribed by Author, 1st ed., 1st printing. Luther Burbank (b.1849 in Massachusetts) found fame early. He single-handedly saved U.S. potato crops from the deadly blight by cultivating russet potatoes. Burbank was a major force in American botany, horticulture -- and a leading pioneer in agricultural science. Burbank was so greatly admired that he was known as the "Wizard of Botany".

Luther Burbank was also a proponent of eugenics, the dominant social philosophy at the turn-of-the-century in the Western World (advocates included Woodrow Wilson and Margaret Sanger). By definition, eugenics is the practice or advocacy of controlled selective breeding of human populations (as by sterilization) to improve the populations' genetics.

"The Training of the Human Plant" is Mr. Burbank's own philosophy on humans and how to grow our children well into a healthy nation. Luther Burbank's ideas were to raise kids the same way we tender and treat plants to be strong, big trees. "For the first ten year" Burbank wrote "not only would I have the child reared in the open, in close touch with nature, a bare-foot boy with all that implies for physical stamina, but should have him reared in love. You can never bring up a child to its best estate without love."

Very good collectible condition.
