The Property of a Lady
Attributed to Pietro Lorenzetti
Siena 1276 - 1348
The Virgin and Child enthroned with Saint Catherine of Alexandria and Saint John the Baptist

tempera on panel, gold ground; pointed top
overall dimensions: 55.8 x 26.4 cm.; 22 x 10 3/8 in.;
painted surface: 20.8 x 36.4 cm.; 8 1/4 x 14 3/8 in.;
roundel: diameter: 5.4 cm.; 2⅛ in.

Condition Report:
The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

It was not possible to assess the back of the original panel.

There is an historic hairline fracture through the roundel in the apex of the frame, the fracture continues down either side of arch. The fracture is stable and there is minimal paint loss along it.
There are 2-3 small hairline fractures, approximately 2-4 cm long, rising vertically up from the bottom edge.

The paint layer is mostly stable and secure; there are some areas that are raised and there has been some very minor pitted loss.

Original gold leaf, although a little worn in some areas with the warm bole dominant, is still in situ to the integral frame, within the raised arch to the patterned background behind the Madonna's throne, to the halos and gilded decoration of the costumes.

The paint layer is stable and secure.

The area of the throne behind the Madonna has been significantly augmented, however, there are remnants of a decorative floral scheme here.

The blue pigment of the Madonna's and St Catherine's robes has been strengthened, likewise St. Catherine's red cloak has been augmented.

The flesh tones have been slightly compromised and the terre verte under painting, used widely to compliment the warmer flesh colours, has become dominant.

Many fine details are intact including the physiognomy of the figures, their hands, hair, feet and, in St. John's case, his fur robe.

The faux marble floor is in good original condition, as is the white step and the highlights to St. Catherine's wheel.

The punched decoration is crisp and details to the halos and gilded decoration of the costumes are well preserved.

Chromatic integrity remains and tonal values visible through, for instance, the crisp folds of St. John's pink robe are intact.

The image presents well.

Condition 11 of the Conditions of Business for Buyers (Online Only) is not applicable to this lot.

Provenance:
