By PHILLIP, Arthur
London, John Stockdale, 1789 (first edition). Quarto, [ii] (engraved title page with vignette, verso blank), 6, [ii] (errata, verso blank), viii, [iv] (list of plates, last blank), [viii] (list of subscribers), x (contents), 298, lxxiv (appendix), [2] (advertising leaf) pages plus the frontispiece portrait, 46 engraved plates and 7 folding maps and charts. The title page states that the book is 'embellished with fifty-five Copper Plates'; this total includes the vignette on the title page. Early half calf and marbled papered boards (later expertly rebacked in period style, with contrasting leather labels on the spine), all edges marbled; old boards a little worn at the corners, with the marbled paper marked and rubbed, with some loss; early Public Library blindstamp to the title leaf and one plate; an old five-digit reference number in ink on the title page, and a later date in ink on the last page of the appendix; plates offset, with occasional foxing (a little heavier on some plates, the frontispiece and title leaf); corner tips of the last leaf of text clipped; mild signs of age and use; overall a very good copy. First edition, later issue, with the name of the artist, Henry Webber, removed from the title page vignette, and the 'Wulpine Opossum' plate now showing 'Vulpine' (but with the early state of the 'Kangooroo' plate). Ferguson 47; Wantrup 5 (and pages 59-64).
