The Wrestlers (after the ancient original), late 19th centur
The Wrestlers (after the ancient original), late 19th century. A bronze reduction with a brown-medal patina based on the famous group of Wrestlers housed at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, a Roman copy of a Hellenistic Greek original discovered in Rome in 1583. This composition, emblematic of the rediscovery of antiquity, has been the subject of numerous reproductions intended for art lovers and travelers on the Grand Tour. The example presented here is a sand-cast piece of good decorative quality; the slight porosity visible on the terrace is characteristic of the casting process. The incised signature “A. Rodin,” which is apocryphal, does not correspond to any known edition by the artist (Auguste Rodin). Base in gray limestone, with an original mounting using threaded rods. Dimensions of the group: H. 20 cm, W. 31 cm, D. 21 cm Base: 34.5 x 22.5 cm
